Recreation

Murray and Calloway Kentucky are known as one of the friendliest, most welcoming communities in America and have, in fact, been named as such by both Rand McNally and USA Today. For detailed information on all we have to offer please visit Tour Murray home of our valued partner the Murray Convention and Visitors Bureau, or visit Calloway County Tourism. In the meantime, here are just a few of the amenities that make Murray “Feel like Home”.

Outdoor Recreation

Land Between the Lakes

One of Kentucky’s top tourist attractions, Land between the Lakes National Recreation Area manages more than 170,000 acres of forests, wetland, and open lands on a peninsula between Kentucky and Barkley Lakes in Western Kentucky and Tennessee. This spot makes a perfect location for camping, picnicking, hiking, fishing, horseback riding, boating, wildlife viewing, and water sports.

Kentucky Lake

Kentucky and Barkley Lakes, joined by a free-flowing canal, form one of the largest man-made bodies of water in North America. Combined, the two lakes have more than 4,000 miles of shoreline and 3,000 miles of water

Golf

The American Society of Golf Architects designated the Miller Memorial Golf Course as one of the best designed 18-hole courses in America. It presents a unique challenge for competitive and recreational golfers alike. Measuring 6,592 yards from the championship tees, the par-71 layout has two distinct nines which require a wide array of shot-making. The outward nine is set on hilly terrain and requires pinpoint accuracy from tee to green, whereas the inward half rewards length and accurate long-iron play. The facility also offers two large practice putting greens, as well as a wide two-level practice tee and a spacious 315-yard driving range.

Other golf courses in Murray include Murray Country Club, Oaks Country Club, and Sullivan’s Par 3.

Hunting & Fishing

For hunters, there are more than 250 days of hunting seasons in the area, complemented by vast hunting ground. High on the list for the regions hunters are white-tailed deer. Kentucky is regularly in the top five states in producing record book deer. Nearby Clarks River National Wildlife Refuge offers open hunting in rich bottomland hardwoods. Organized Sports

In addition to the numerous organized sports events and teams at local parks, Murray and Calloway County citizens are great fans of high school football, basketball and yes, even soccer. But what we are most passionate about is Murray State University. At GoRacers.com you can get a taste of our passion for the numerous opportunities to become a fan of everything from Volleyball to our proud tradition of men’s basketball which has won 19 Ohio Valley Conference regular season championships, 15 OVC Tournament championship, and made 15 appearances in the NCAA Tournament.

Parks & Rec

Parks are a vital part of any community, and Murray is proud to be home to multiple parks, covering 164 acres of land. Thanks in part to the community’s parks, Murray has been named a Playful City USA for eight years in a row.
